The career advice we inherited says: pick a lane, go deep, move up. T-shaped. Vertical. Linear. That model made sense when industries were stable and expertise meant doing one thing for thirty years.
But the industries aren't stable anymore, and the most interesting creative leaders I know don't have linear careers. They have mountain ranges -- multiple peaks of deep expertise, connected by valleys where they had to figure out what transferred and what didn't.
The M-Shaped Careeris a book about that pattern. It's part memoir -- six peaks across thirty years, from Broadway to AI-forward production -- and part framework for thinking about career architecture when the ground keeps shifting. It's for the people whose resumes don't fit neatly into a LinkedIn headline, and who've been told their zigzag path is a liability.
It's not. It's the asset.
Why I'm writing this.
Because I spent twenty years feeling like my career didn't make sense on paper. Dance and architecture. Broadway and broadcast. Social media and studio infrastructure. Every time I moved to the next thing, somebody told me I was throwing away the last thing.
They were wrong every time. Each peak made the next one possible. The performance training made me a better digital creative. The digital experimentation made me a better social strategist. The social-first leadership made me a better studio builder. And the studio builds made Sageworx inevitable.
I'm writing this book because I think the M-shaped pattern is more common than people realize -- and more valuable than the career-advice industry acknowledges. If you've ever felt like your nonlinear path is a problem to be explained away, this book is for you.
